Spanish day of week has a rich cultural history and belong to Roman and Hebrew traditions.
- lunes – Monday in English and very first day of week in Spanish, also known as “moon day“.
- martes – (Tuesday) The Second one and known as “day of Mars“.
- miercoles – (Wednesday) Third one, which called as day of “Mercury“, the messenger of gods.
- jueves – (Thursday) Fourth one called as “Jupiter“, the king of Roman gods.
- viernes – Fifth one, the day of “Venus”, the Roman goddess of love and beauty.
- sabado – Sixth day of the week in Spanish and derived from Hebrew word shabbat, which means rest.
- domingo – Seventh and the last day of week in Spanish and known as the “Lords day”.
Rules to Remember
Here are some grammatical rules to follow while days of weeks ins Spanish:-
- Capitalization – Never capitalize days of week in Spanish until these are being used in beginning of sentence.
- Masculine Gender – All days are masculine noun therefore, preceded by masculine article “el” for specific day and “los” for recurring days.
- Plural – To make (lunes, martes, miercoles, jueves) only add article ‘los’ in beginning and for sabado and domingo only add s at end.
- Abbreviations: Following letters (L, M, X, J, V, S, D) are used to represent days of week in spanish from monday to sunday. Letter “X” is used for miercoles to avoid confusion with martes.
